I can recall back when I was in university. Computers were small, slow, and the screens were nothing to write home about. They connect to your computer through your USB port, and don't need to be configured in the least. Windows has it's own backup software, so you don't need to worry about that. All you do is plug it in, and watch it work. Nothing could be simpler. And depending on how much data you have to back up, you can be finished in just a few minutes. There's no reason not to get one of these things. So what now? The best thing would be to go out and buy one of these external hard drives today. You'll be surprised how cheap they are. Once you have it installed and your computer is backed up and safe, you'll be amazed how much better you'll feel for this wonderful decision you are about to make.
